The Finnland-Institut has long been committed to the promotion of contemporary music. It is therefore a particular honour for us to have supported Esa-Pekka Salonen‘s new Horn Concerto as a co-commissioner alongside the Lucerne Festival 2025, the Berliner Festspiele/Musikfest Berlin, the Boston Symphony Orchestra, the Elbphilharmonie in Hamburg, and the Hong Kong Philharmonic Orchestra. This was made possible through the publisher Wise Music, which also publishes Salonen´s works: already in 2024, on the occasion of its 30th anniversary, the Institut was involved in the release of Kaija Saariaho‘s final composition, her trumpet concerto ‘Hush’.
Salonen´s Horn Concerto was created in close collaboration with Stefan Dohr, who has been the solo horn player of the Berlin Philharmonic for more than 30 years. The world premiere of the piece took place on 30 August 2025 at the Lucerne Festival, performed under Salonen’s direction by the Orchestre de Paris, of which he will become Chief Conductor in 2027. The German premiere on 1 September 2025 at the Musikfest Berlin was followed by another performance in the renowned Elbphilharmonie Hamburg (3 September 2025).
For February 2026, concerts are planned in Boston, in April in Paris, and in May in Hong Kong.
